How To install a GFCI
Before You Begin
Safety First
- Turn OFF power at the circuit breaker.
- Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
- Read all instructions included with your GFCI outlet.
- If you are unsure about any wiring step, contact a licensed electrician.
Tools You'll Need
- Flathead screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Voltage tester
- Wire stripper
- Needle-nose pliers
- Electrical tape (optional)
Step 1: Turn Off Power
Locate the correct breaker in your electrical panel and switch it OFF.
Use a voltage tester to confirm there is no power at the outlet before touching any wires.
Step 2: Remove the Existing Outlet
- Remove the wall plate.
- Unscrew the existing outlet from the electrical box.
- Carefully pull the outlet forward.
- Take note of the wire locations before disconnecting them.
Step 3: Identify LINE and LOAD Wires
Your GFCI outlet has two sets of terminals:
LINE
The incoming power from the electrical panel.
LOAD
Optional terminals used to provide GFCI protection to additional downstream outlets.
Important: If you are replacing a standard outlet and protecting only that outlet, connect wires to the LINE terminals only.
Step 4: Connect the Wires
Connect the Hot Wire
- Black wire → Brass-colored LINE terminal
Connect the Neutral Wire
- White wire → Silver-colored LINE terminal
Connect the Ground Wire
- Bare copper or green wire → Green ground screw
If you are protecting additional outlets downstream, connect those wires to the LOAD terminals according to the wiring diagram provided with the outlet.
Step 5: Secure the Outlet
- Carefully fold the wires back into the electrical box.
- Mount the GFCI outlet using the supplied screws.
- Install the wall plate.
Step 6: Restore Power
Turn the circuit breaker back ON.
Press the RESET button on the GFCI outlet to activate it.
Step 7: Test the GFCI
Testing ensures the outlet is functioning properly.
- Press the TEST button.
- Power should immediately shut off.
- Press the RESET button.
- Power should be restored.

Troubleshooting
GFCI Will Not Reset
- Verify power is available at the breaker.
- Check that LINE and LOAD wires are not reversed.
- Confirm all wire connections are secure.
No Power After Installation
- Check breaker status.
- Verify wiring connections.
- Test for incoming voltage at the LINE terminals.
